چکیده

We describe the production of cold, slow-moving LiH molecules. The molecules are produced in the ground state using laser ablation and supersonic expansion, and 68% of the population is transferred to the rotationally excited state using narrowband radiation at the rotational frequency of 444 GHz. The molecules are then decelerated from 420 m/s to 53 m/s using a 100 stage Stark decelerator. We demonstrate and compare two different deceleration modes, one where every stage is used for deceleration, and another where every third stage decelerates and the intervening stages are used to focus the molecules more effectively. We compare our experimental data to the results of simulations and find good agreement. These simulations include the velocity dependence of the detection efficiency and the probability of transitions between the weakfield seeking and strong-field seeking quantum states. Together, the experimental and simulated data provide information about the spatial extent of the source of molecules. We consider the prospects for future trapping and sympathetic cooling

Stark slowing asymmetric rotors: weak-field-seeking states and nonadiabatic transitions.

Stark deceleration is one of the few methods that can be used to slow polyatomic molecules. We present calculations of Stark shift energies, a quantitative analysis of nonadiabatic transition probabilities, and orientational distribution functions applicable to typical Stark slowing conditions for the two small asymmetric rotors nitromethane and acetaldehyde. We show that asymmetric polyatomic ...

Sympathetic cooling by collisions with ultracold rare gas atoms, and recent progress in optical Stark deceleration.

We propose a general scheme for sympathetic cooling of molecules to microK temperatures on a timescale of seconds. Experimental parameters have been estimated from theory, which indicate the viability of the scheme. This method, which is particularly suited to optical Stark deceleration, utilises ultracold, laser cooled metastable rare gas atoms quenched to their ground state as collision partn...

Stark deceleration of CaF molecules in strong- and weak-field seeking states.

We report the Stark deceleration of CaF molecules in the strong-field seeking ground state and in a weak-field seeking component of a rotationally-excited state. We use two types of decelerator, a conventional Stark decelerator for the weak-field seekers and an alternating gradient decelerator for the strong-field seekers, and we compare their relative merits. We also consider the application o...

Optimizing the Stark-decelerator beamline for the trapping of cold molecules using evolutionary strategies

We demonstrate feedback control optimization for the Stark deceleration and trapping of neutral polar molecules using evolutionary strategies. In a Stark-decelerator beamline, pulsed electric fields are used to decelerate OH radicals and subsequently store them in an electrostatic trap. The efficiency of the deceleration and trapping process is determined by the exact timings of the applied ele...

Alternating-gradient focusing and deceleration of large molecules

Exploiting the Stark effect, neutral polar molecules can be focused and decelerated in an array of time-varying inhomogeneous electric fields in alternatinggradient configuration. Using this principle, a new experiment for the focusing and deceleration of large molecules from a molecular beam has been set up. With the new setup, the alternating-gradient focusing and deceleration of benzonitrile...
